eBook - Chapter 3

The third chapter of my book is about Rationing.

In this page I have some text which has been taken from the account, some audio and an image of a table which will have the foods that were rationed as well as a list above with the quantities.

This is the text that will be going into this chapter:

This is the table which has the food on it:

I found the images of these foods on the internet. In Photoshop I edited them by using a cutout effect as well as film grain. I then opened the images in Illustrator and gave it a feather effect which I think works well.

This is the ration image which has the quantities on it.

I used an image of a ration book to get the background and using the clone tool I was able to get rid of all the text. In iBooks I will be doing the same thing as I did in the previous chapter and using this image for the audio.

This is what the page looks like in iBooks.

eBook - Chapter 2

The second chapter of my book is about where my Great Grandma lived at the time in which she wrote the account.

In this page I have got some text about where my Great Grandma and a bit about the camps. There will be an image of her house and some ariel photos that I found during my research, finally there will also be the wallpaper background. I plan to use widgets on these pages so that when you tap on a image a pop up will come up with a caption about the image. This is the text that will be in section of the book:

The text on this page will be some quotes which I have taken from my Great Grandma's account and some of it will be based on the research that I have done on www.ournewhaven.org.uk.

The images on this page will be:

There will also be some audio in the chapter which will be part of the account.
This is what the pages looks like in iBooks:

This is how the beginning of the chapter looks. I created a widget for a pop up which I put on top of the image of her house. I typed in the text that I wanted and in the box I changed the opacity so that it could sit on top of the image.

Again I did exactly the same with creating widgets for the other two images. On final image I had it so that when you tapped on the image some audio played. To get it so that when you tapped it played, all I did was drag and drop the audio on the page and there was an option of how I wanted it to be displayed, I chose to have it displayed as an image which lead on to drag and drop the image that I wanted.

eBook - Chapter 1

The first chapter of my book is the bio of my Great Grandma. I thought that it would be nice to give a bit of information about her before I showed more about her account that she wrote about the start of WW2.

In this page I have got some text about my Great Grandma, an image of her and the wallpaper with a fireplace. This is the text content that its going in the book:

I typed the text up in Pages so that I could easily put it into iBooks.

I'm going to put this photograph onto this page.

As well as this wallpaper background with a fireplace.

For the title of the chapter I used the font 'Snell Roundhand', which I thought looked quite similar to that of my Great Grandma's writing. I also used 'Georgia' for the rest of the text. At the moment I'm not quite sure as to what to put on the blank bit of space on the second page, but I'm going to come back to it when I have finished the rest of the book.

eBook - Introduction

Animation

The introduction animation for my eBook is the idea of having a wall with photos on it and having it pan a long the wall so you can see the pictures and then gradually panning out so that in the end seeing the whole wall.

Storyboard

How I made it

First of all I made a project folder which had all the assets that I wanted to use in it. I then went on to import the background, to do this I double clicked in the project area and opened the background image that I wanted.

The next thing that I did was add all the images that I wanted. Once I had done that I was then ready to start making my animation. I wanted to merge all the layers together so that everything stayed in there right place.

I selected all of the layers that I wanted, which were the photographs. I then clicked on 'Layer', and 'Pre-Compose'

I renamed the composition and chose to have it opened in a new composition.

I went on to add a position keyframe. I moved the slider on the timeline a long a bit and then added another position keyframe, I added another three position keyframes so that in the end it went round in a circle shape. Once I was happy with that, I then went on to add sound.
Finally I went on to render the animation.

I clicked on 'Composition' and then 'Add to Render Queue'. I changed some of the settings:

Once I had done that, I then selected where I wanted to save it and then started the render.

These screen shots show what the animation looks like.

eBook - Front Cover

I hadn't really thought about how I wanted the front cover to look. I thought that the best idea would be to again continue with the idea of wallpaper and have it cover the front of the book. I then thought of having the title of the book in a picture frame, with it being displayed like a cross stitch; which fitted in with the images in the book and makes it look more like a picture hanging on a wall.

This is what my front cover looks like. Although it does look quite plain, I think comments from crit will help give me an idea of how I could improve it.

First Step

Before I go on to make my eBook, I made a project folder where I put in all my assets.

This is the project folder that I made.

In the 'Assets' folder I am going to put the images of the wallpaper that I have edited and will be used for some of the pages of the eBook. The wallpaper will go in its own folder which will be called 'Wallpaper Background'. Also in the folder there will my edited photographs and the image of the title. In the 'Chapter 1 - Bio' folder, I am going to include all the content which will be going in to the chapter. To make it clearer for myself I will divide the content up into folders; images and text. Same in the 'Chapter 2 - Where She Lived', I will have all the content inside separate folders; audio, text, images, animation. In 'Chapter 3 - Rationing' there will also be all the content that I need for the chapter which will again be divided into folders; text, audio, images. Lastly the 'Chapter 4 - Gallery' will contain the images that I have collected and again will in a folder called 'images'.

Finalising Design Ideas

In my sketch book I have been finalising my ideas and making sure I know exactly how I want my eBook to look.
I have used the idea of the wallpaper as the main design theme of the eBook and in my sketch book I have done some layouts that I could use, where the content will still be clear and easy to read. I've also edited and collected all the pictures that I want and in my sketch book and on After Effects I have story boarded and started animating the animations that will be in the book.

These are my edited pictures for my book. I didn't do much editing to them, apart from changing the levels and adding a picture frame which I made using a wood texture. I used the dodge and burn tool on the frame to try and make it look old. In some of the pictures I've used the clone tool to fix some of the marks and bits that I didn't want in the pictures.

These are the photographs that my Grandma gave to me. Once I had scanned them on to the computer I found the quality of the pictures really good, however I used the levels tool in Photoshop to sharpen the quality which has made the pictures look sharper. For the picture frames, I found a bit of wood on the internet and in Photoshop I cloned and stretched it to make the frame. I experimented with the dodge and burn tool to give the wood a bit more effect and to try and give it an old look to it.

I got these images from www.ournewhaven.org.uk, these didn't need much editing apart from adjusting the levels just to create a sharper look. The text images are in the idea of a cross stitch. I thought this ideas fits in really well with having images and picture frames hanging on the wall. To create this all I did was find a cross stitch font, and background. In Photoshop I put together the background and the picture frame and typed my text on top, to make it look more like a cross stitch pattern I used ' this to make a pattern; I made it red to make it look a little like flower buds.

I found the cross stitch font on the internet as well as the cross stitch background.

For the text part of my book I will use the research that I have come up and I'll take quotes out of the account, which will relate to the chapter in the book.

These are my storyboard sketches for my two animations; the introduction and camps.
