Project Three: Latest TV - Idents/ Motion Graphics

This the new project which we've started. With this project we using motion graphics and with this we are making TV idents for a live client. The live client is Latest TV, who are based in Brighton and have recently been given a license so by the end of the year they will be on Freeview, Channel 8. We haven't been given a written brief yet, but we know that we need to make some TV idents for the station and also some title sequences for some of the shows which will be on the channel.

http://thelatest.co.uk/brighton/category/tv/brighton-lights/

Last week we were visited by Val and Matt who are part of the Latest TV team. It was our chance to find out what they're after and a bit about what they do and what the station does. These are some of the shows which will be featured on the channel:
- Brighton Lights
- Deep and Meaningless (this is Val's show)
- The Vote
- News
- City Of...
- Sik (this Matt's show)
- Gate Crash TV

Whilst Val and Matt were talking I wrote down some notes:
- News and community shows will shown for 2 hours a day
- There will be bought in content
- Meetings at 5:30 on Monday in Brighton
- Continuity announcements
- News graphics, Brighton Lights, The Vote
- Matt's show - special effects - wants to be blown up (can find him on YouTube)
- Latest TV colours - red and white
- Keep their logo
- October or December the channel will be launched on Freeview 8
- The font that they use is Verdana
- Focus on station + ident branding
- 'City Of...' - Music, Fashion, Health, Comedy, Food
- Music - could be composed to go with the idents
- Title sequence for Deep and Meaningless - astrology, could be drawn/ animated - the puppets
- Package of bits per show - self contained bits within shows
- Ident - think about themes (Pride, Christmas)
- Hashtag possibilities, maybe use QR code for the TV

The day after they visited Val emailed all of us a document which had more details of each show. After having a look at in class, she then a week later sent an updated version which gave more information which helped in what they actually wanted.

Info Doc 1 - After meeting 4th March 2013

The following are show’s or idents which we could use on channel 8. Which serves as a guide to all motion graphics students working on the Latest TV projects with all relevant contact details.

Idents for Latest TV - They can say both ‘8’ or ‘Latest TV’ or  combine both and say something to the effect of ‘You are watching latest TV on channel 8’ We may also need idents to use when the continuity says what’s coming up now or later: Now and Next.. Still research to compare with other channels - See if there are timed sequences at a different length. Remembering the brand colours for latest TV tend to be red and white using the Vandanna Font. There are times when a Vandanna font just won’t work with your designs, in which case, we are open to others.

Brighton Lights - A topical mix match of content hosted by Guy Lloyd. There are many examples of this already on www.thelatest.tv website. Here’s a link to the latest one which was experimental in that they filmed it live for the first time in a studio setting. The set here, is not necessarily going to stay so we’re open to a new brand of colours and styles, perhaps which could eventually influence the design of set.
For Brighton Lights the music for opening sequence is fixed and Andy Nichols can send it to appropriate people as and when you need it - see his contact below.
Brighton lights will need to be packaged, including:
An opening sequence needs to be 20 seconds long and possibly include images of local landmarks.
2 second idents to act as a bridge between different acts.
Lower third’s.

The Vote - Political debate style show hosted by Frank le Duc. View it here:
We are open to new music and title sequence. Again, opening credits, bridging idents and lower third  required to give the show an all round brand.

NEWS - Probably to be the most viewed. We need this brand from scratch, opening sequence, bridging idents and lower thirds. Research other news to get an idea about timing.

CITY OF - I can see this working well with the Latest TV ident style brands. They too are very quick appearing at the beginning of the show only. 3-5 seconds in length. Although we may want a ‘What’s on tomorrow’s City of ....’ So far the City of’s that we have are the following: City of Community, City of Music, City of Art, City of Film, City of Ecology, City of Health, City of Fashion, City of Food. Although these programmes may be largely factual programming, there may be exceptions to this rule - such as City of Comedy or City of Accentrics.

Outspoken talking heads - Bill’s Talking Heads outspoken show. Like George Galloway or Cheguevara to camera with a plain background. There will also be Music videos (outspoken controversial and shocking) every week, Eminemmylou doing cartoon strip about a young woman ‘Mean girls’. Bill is totally open to new ideas for the opening sequence, he said “as long as it’s shocking, never been seen before - cause that’s what my show’s going to be like” If you’d like to work on this one, you can contact him to communicate your ideas.

Shuvit - New working title ‘SIK’ - Matt Whistler an unofficial taxi / or a rigged tour guide in candid camera style in a Tuc Tuc engages his uncomfortable passengers/shoppers with pit stop slapstick stunts and psycho crazed conversation.  During time off the road Matt Whistler the artist creates masterpieces on canvas through stuntman tomfoolery. It’s light comedy entertainment - Matt to confirm - pre- or post watershed?  Subtitles for other sections within the show include: Matt Whistlers Meme Machine, Bonkers McConkers. If you have idea’s you will need to communicate directly with Matt

Deep & Meaningless - This show involves Two caterpillars, one called Deep and one called Meaningless. Val Aviv is the hostess, our set is based in the clouds. Hayley expressed an interest in doing the titles for this. Brand for entire show including music, opening title sequence, idents between sections and lower thirds. Once it is for certain call me. We filmed our pilot and have some still’s if you want to involve idea’s around the set. Contact Val for more info.

Above is what Val sent us about the different shows on Latest TV.
